Around seventy thousand children, between ages 10 and 15, were abducted into the guerrilla militia known as the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) during its two-decade long insurgency in the northern region of Uganda (1986-2006). The boys were trained to be soldiers and the girls were used as slaves. The LRA would raid villages in the middle of the night and take boys and girls from their families, beat them and tie them all up with ropes and force them to walk long distances carrying looted supplies. Many were forced to kill others, and some were even forced to murder their own family members and/or close friends.
Our Founder/Director
Jane Ekayu
Jane Ekayu worked as a counsellor at the Rachele Rehabilitation Centre in Northern Uganda from 2004-2006 as a trauma therapist for former child soldiers rescued from the Lords’ Resistance Army. After the Rachele centre closed, Jane realized that there was still a great need to keep supporting these boys and girls once they were reunited with their families. The children’s long-term challenges included trauma, lack of education and economic security, physical health complications, and community stigmatization.
